Creating Confidence: Why Online Art Classes Work (and How I Make Them Personal)

Online art classes have become such a terrific part of how I connect with students, and how they connect with their creativity. Since 2015 - TEN YEARS! - I’ve seen again and again how this format – flexible, encouraging, and practical – really works. And not just in a “watch and copy” kind of way. It works because I try to design the way I teach so that you know you really can have a go.

These shots are from my ‘Start with Blue’ online class - ‘blue and white’ is so classic, and it’s a great way to start with very few art supplies. Right now you can sign up to this class for just $45 AUD - SAVE $65! Here’s the link to get started!

My aim is always to make learning art feel possible – and joyful! It’s not about creating the perfect painting to hang on a wall. It’s about showing up, being curious, and having all that you need to try. I think one of the most powerful things a teacher can do (especially online) is to anticipate where someone might get stuck, and gently guide them through it. I’ve taught face-to-face classes for years, so I know where those ‘stuck-points’ are. And I want students to feel like they’re right there with me, with the best seat in the house, and I’m explaining clearly, sharing the shortcuts, and celebrating their progress.

One of my favourite examples is Elizabeth S. – a super lovely student who hadn’t painted since school. She was nervous, hesitant, and convinced she wasn’t “artistic”. But through our online classes, she found herself making time to create, and more importantly, seriously enjoying it. “It was like someone gave me permission to enjoy art again,” she said. That’s the shift I live for. It’s not about turning someone into a professional painter overnight. It’s about giving them the space and support to say, “Yes – I can do this. And I know where to start.”

Another reason I love teaching online is the flexibility it gives you. You can pause and rewind me (without me ever knowing!), #paintinyourpyjamas, fit it in between school runs or shift work – whatever works for you. Life’s busy, and creativity needs to fit your life, not feel like another demand. When I plan a class, I think about that – how to keep it light, doable, and rewarding at every stage.

In the end, what makes online art classes really sing is the same thing that makes any great class work: connection. Even through a screen, I want you to feel encouraged, welcomed, and seen. I want you to know we’re in this together. When you pick up a brush and start making marks, it’s not just about art – it’s about confidence, play, and remembering that creativity belongs to you, Art Friend!

If this sounds like the kind of creative space you’ve been craving, I’d love to welcome you into one of my classes.

Whether you’re picking up a brush for the first time in years or just looking for a fresh burst of inspiration, there’s a spot for you here.

Let’s make some art – the Shiny Happy way - with JOY!

(Oh, and ‘Start With Blue’ is a great place to begin! You can start with one blue biro!)
